INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

Rotary International offers a broad range of humanitarian, intercultural, and educational programs and activities designed to improve the human condition and advance the organization's ultimate goal of world understanding and peace. ABOUT POLIO PLUS

In 1985, Rotary launched the PolioPlus program to protect children worldwide from the cruel and fatal consequences of polio. In 1988, the World Health Assembly challenged the world to eradicate polio. Since that time, Rotary's efforts and those of partner agencies, including the World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and governments around the world, have achieved a 99 percent reduction in the number of polio cases worldwide. Rotarians stand at the brink of a great victory and look forward to celebrating the global eradication of polio in 2005, the organization's centennial year.

FREE WHEELCHAIR MISSION

In wealthy countries if a person needs a wheelchair, one will be provided. In poor countries perhaps as many as 100 million crippled humans live without this basic need. They crawl on the ground, or wait until a loved one will carry them. Many charitable organizations ship either donated used wheelchairs or conventional design new wheelchairs to poor countries. This is a very costly and inefficient process. To date less than 100,000 wheelchairs were placed through much effort

It is the Free Wheelchair Missions Vision to design the least expensive wheelchair that will satisfy a large portion of the world's needs. We have these wheelchairs manufactured in third world countries. We distribute these wheelchairs or partner with other charitable organizations for distribution. Our wheelchairs will be given free of charge to those in need. We will fund this operation through donations from individuals, foundations, and grants.

The Cambria Rotary club has joined with this project to increase the awareness of this most worthwhile project and help solicit donations to enable the continued placement of hundreds of wheelchairs to those who need them most.

For more details on this project please visit the Free Wheelchair Mission website.
